Meredith: So he's got fishing gear and boots and hair products. I don't
have room for any of that stuff. And he talks, i mean not a little, he chats.
He's chatty freaking Cathy.
Cristina: Not right now.
Meredith: And then, you know what's gonna happen after he moves in,
don't you? We'll build a house on his land, which will be our land because we'll
be married. And then I'll be Dr Mrs Shepherd. And you what comes after that,
don't you? Babies. And they'll be his babies so they'll have perfect hair. And
they'll be chatty so i'll have five chatty children, a chatty husband and live
in a house in the wilderness. And then i'll start sleeping with your husband.
I've got to tell him I changed my mind, don't you think?
Cristina: Meredith!
Meredith: What? Why are you making that face?
Cristina: Shut up
Chief (to the staff): We used to be the best surgical program in the west, an upstart program that no one ever heard of, blew everyone out of the water. Then overnight, we got old and trenched and sloppy just like everyone else. We've been resting on our laurels. You have all been failing; failing to take initiative, failing to ask the tough questions, failing to practice your skills, failing to give opportunity to practice skills. And I let it happen, so you have not failed, we have failed. Well it stops and it stops now. People sliding over general surgery as though they will never see anything but a heart or a brain through the course of their careers, as though blood from the heart doesn't make it's way through the whole body, or that nerves don't travel past the brain stem. It's shotty teaching and it makes for shotty surgeons. We failed, you get it? We all have and it stops now. The surgical training protocol is officially changing people, the bar has been raised. Consider yourself on notice.
Meredith: Once upon a time, happily ever after. The stories we tell are the stuff of dreams. Fairytales don't come true. Reality is much stormier, much murkier, much scarier. Reality. It's so much more interesting than living happily ever after.
Meredith: We all remember the bedtime stories of our childhoods; the shoe fits Cinderella, the frog turns into a Prince, Sleeping Beauty is awakened with a kiss. Once upon a time and then they lived happily every after. Fairytales, the stuff of dreams. The problem is, fairytales don't come true. It's the other stories , the ones that begin with dark and stormy nights and end in the unspeakable. It's the nightmares that always seem to become reality. The person who invented "Happily Ever After" should have his ass kicked, so hard. edit »
Meredith: Do you wanna move in with me?
Derek: You wanna live together?
Meredith: Well I mean I could, I just, uh, but if you don't want to,
I...
Derek Yes.
Meredith: Yes?
Derek: Absolutely. Are you sure you're ready?
Derek: I am leaning into the fear in the hope I get a happy ending.
Derek: I don't even know what that means.
Derek: You wanna hear how i cut my hand? It's a good story.
Meredith: I'm not sure moving in together is a good idea.
Derek: Ok, fine.
Meredith: Fine? What does that mean?
Derek: It means that i know you.
Meredith: So what, you didn't believe that i'd let you move-in in the
first place?
Derek: I believe that you believed it. Look, i'm going to move very
slowly, baby steps, no sudden moves. You're like a deer in the woods.
Meredith: Ok, I built the house of candles. That is unprecedented in
the Meredith Chronicles.
Derek: Fine lets move-in together.
Meredith: Fine.
Derek: Unless of course you just want to go ahead and get married?
(Meredith freezes)
Derek: Ha! Gotcha! You wanna know where i learned that? It goes with
the story of how i cut my hand.
(Izzie walks up to Meredith)
Izzie: What did you say to Alex?
Meredith: I.. I didn't say anything. I just said that i think it's nice
that you two are friendly again.
Izzie: Dammit Meredith, why can't you just mind you're own business? I
mean, forget it. I should never have told you anything. You can't keep anything
to yourself unless it's for Cristina! (Izzie
walks off)
Meredith: Izzie! (She
sighs and turns back to Derek
Derek: Marriage?
Meredith: Not ready.
(Derek walks up to Rose who is writing on the OR board.)
Derek: Rose.
(She ignores him and continues writing.)
Derek: Please look at me.
(She continues to ignore him.)
Derek: If you're going to behave like this, you can't be in my OR.
(Rose stops writing, sighs and turns to him.)
Rose: Ok there's no good way to say this. I've been acting this way
because I'm... I'm carrying your child, Derek.
Rose: Ha! Gotcha! (She
burst out laughing.)
Derek: This is your idea of a joke?
Rose: Oh please, you deserve it. Who do you think you are? (Puts
on Derek's voice.)If you're going to keep behaving this way, you can't be
in my OR.
Derek: You should transfer to a different speciality.
Rose: You should transfer to a different speciality!
Derek: I'm a neurosurgeon.
Rose: You should have thought of that before repeatedly assuring me
that you were over your ex. (Walking
away.) See you in the OR. I'm
not going anywhere.
Derek: The chief is under the spell of some insane man in camouflage.
(Derek hands a chart to a nurse with his bandaged hand and winces)
Mark: You saved my patient's life. He'll never talk again but still,
life saved. What happened to your hand?
Derek: Scalpel. Rose. Non-intentional.
Mark: She's a dead mouse on the kitchen floor. At some point you've got
to pick it up and throw it away.
Derek: Mmmm.
Mark: Want me to take a look at that?
Derek: Meredith's going to take care of it.
Mark: I'm a renowned plastic surgeon.
Derek: It's just a scratch.
Mark: Grey's a resident.
Derek: She gives me sex, especially when I'm wounded.
Mark: (to George) What kind of moron are you O'Malley? Are you a special moron from the aisle of complete and utter morons!?
Meredith: Dr. Bailey it's kind of cold out here.
Dr.Bailey: Someone will come
Alex: No one's coming.
Izzie: Maybe some old people with broken hips we can fix.
Dr.Bailey: Okay, stop talking. We are Seattle Grace Hospital; and
rankings or no rankings we are going to stand outside, at the ready, on alert
and give the best care available to every single patient that arrives at our
door. We may no longer be ranked the best but I'm the best and you're my
residents, which means you're the best.
Meredith: What was the point? All those hours and all that money?
What's the point? The world is a horrible place. Young people die of diseases.
It makes absolutely no sense to try to be happy in a world that's such a
horrible place.
Dr. Wyatt: Yes.
Meredith: What?
Dr. Wyatt: Yes, horrible things do happen. Happiness in the face of all
of that, that's not the goal. Feeling the horrible and knowing that you're not
going to die from those feelings, that's the point.
Lexie: I've got a photographic memory.
Alex: Dude, a Lexiepedia.
Meredith: (voice-over) Bones break, organs burst, flesh tears. We can sew the flesh, repair the damage, ease the pain. But when life breaks down, when we break down, there's no science, no hard and fast rules, we just have to feel our way through and to a surgeon there's nothing worse, and there's nothing better.

Chief: What are you people doing?
Izzie: We were just, uh, just deciding which of our interns to give to
George.
Cristina: Uh huh.
Bailey: Oh, you think I got to choose my interns? And I picked you
people... 'cause you're all such a surgical dream team? (to
Alex) You, you're lazy. (to
Izzie) You're whiney. (to
Meredith) Butter fingers over
there... downright depressing. (to
Cristina)You, Yang, you're just annoying. Choosing their own interns! What
are ...
Chief: Give me those damn cards. (he
picks out four, hands cards to George)O'Malley, you have interns.
5x06 La vita durante la guerra
Izzie: Are you done beating me up for the day? Because I'd like to go
home.
Owen: I was just trying to teach you.
Izzie: You wanna teach us - take us to the simile lab with the plastic
guys who have heart rates, and blood pressure and croupe when you nick an artery.
Owen: Until you apply scalpel to skin, Stevens, you're just going
through the motions.
Izzie: That attitude - that's from before. We have the technology now,
we don't have to torture live creatures.
Owen: No, you don't get to accuse me of torture. Those animals felt no
pain.
Izzie: You don't know that. You don't know that. You don't know what
they felt, you don't know how scared they were. Animals are sensitive and
intelligent creatures. And that is not me being emotional, that is simply the
truth. You want me to learn from your methods? You want me to learn anything
from you, then don't stab pigs in front of me and tell me that the sky isn't
blue! You are torturing God's creatures in an age where we have the technology
that no longer requires us to. If you wanna do that, go ahead - but don't tell
me I'm less of a doctor for walking away. (she
storms out of the room)
Owen: Quick and dirty, Cristine!
Cristina: Aah, Cristina! Cristin-a.
Erica: I went to the
Chief about Izzie Stevens and he completely shut me down. Well, we'll see what
he says when I report this to UNOS.
Callie: Wait, what? Why? What good would come of that?
Erica: What do you mean?
Callie: What possible good would that do? Would it affect your
patient's outcome?
Erica: My patient wouldn't be here if it wasn't for her!
Callie: So you're going to report this to UNOS and cost this hospital
its transplant certification? Cost its patients organs? Cost people their jobs?
Cost Izzie Stevens her career ...
Erica: Wait, so you're taking Izzie Stevens' side in this? Over mine?
Callie: She's a doctor. She's one of our doctors. There's a reason we
have each other's backs, Erica.
Erica: Please, don't talk to me about a code. Because this is not that.
Callie: No, this is that. Look, I don't know what happened between
Denny Duquette and Izzie Stevens that night, but unless you were in the middle
of that situation, I don't see how you can make a judgment.
Erica: Easy. There's right, and there's wrong. And this, was wrong. And
illegal. There is no gray area here. You can't kind of think this is okay. You
can't kind of side with Izzie Stevens. And you can't be kind of a lesbian.
Callie: Yes, I can.
Cristina: The wife's here, of the beating victim. She ID'd her husband,
so I-
Owen: What's his name? I was wondering if you found out his name so
that he would become a person to you. They're all people, you know. This is not
a game or a competition, who gets surgeries and who doesn't. They're people and
we get to save them. Now you're good. You're excellent and you can win all the
contests. But if that's why you're doing this then you shouldn't be. Did you
find out his name?
Cristina: My dad died when I was nine. In a car accident, I was with
him in the car. While we waited for the ambulance, I tried to keep his chest
closed, so he wouldn't bleed so much. When he died, my
hands felt his heart stop beating. That's why I do this. It's also why I win all
the contests. The patient's name is Tom. (Cristina
leaves)
Owen: Single malt scotch
Meredith (to Derek): I need you to tell Mark to keep his little Sloan out of little Grey
Izzie: I said goodbye. I burned the sweater!
Denny: Yeah, thanks for that, by the way. I loved that sweater. You
made me that sweater.
Denny: Izzie... stop freaking out.
Izzie: You're not real. You're not real.
Denny: Hey, I told you.
Izzie: You're not real! You're not real! You're not real!
Denny: Look at me. Touch me. (Izzie
touches Denny's chest) See? Told
you I was real.
Cristina: I'm sorry. We lost him. The patient. I'm sorry.
Owen: I don't need you to be sorry. I don't need you to be sorry. I
don't need you
...
Cristina: Alright, alright. (Owen
kisses Cristina)
Meredith (closing voiceover): The ties that binds us are sometimes impossible to explain. They connect us even after it seems like the ties should be broken. Some bonds defy distance and time and logic; Because some ties are simply... meant to be.
Alex (referring
to the interns): Where are the stooges?
Cristina: Well, that moron and the moron and the other moron are AWOL.
Izzie (talking to Denny): Dead people don't apologize.
Alex (talking
about the poo operation): We're just about ready.
Lauren (to
Seth): I'm sorry, honey for all my crazy.
Seth: Don't be sorry, I love you, even crazy. Okay. I've taken your
crap all these years. It's finally time for you to take mine.
Alex: Get an intern to page me if my guy agrees to crap.
Meredith: Did you
split the muscle, this way, or that way?
Bailey: This way. No, wait, hold it, that way. It's the kind of thing
that comes so natural you don't even think about it after a while. (looks
at Meredith and Cristina) The
two of you think it so hard you make me tired just looking at you.
Callie: I'll still have you, right? You'll still be my friend. You'll
have sex with me when I want.
Mark: Anytime. Yeah. ... Once your face heals.
Callie: I hate you!
Mark: You love me.
Meredith (to
Alex): If you're out here, then who's in there with Izzie ... Derek?!
Derek (runs
out of his room): What?!
Meredith: Nothing. Nothing. I just-
Derek: What are you doing dressed at 3 in the morning? (hears
Izzie moaning)Who's making a porno movie in Izzie's room?
Meredith: What... what are you doin' out here?
Alex: What, you think you're the only one who paid a nurse to have her
page you with an appy?
Meredith: That's not what I meant.
(hears Izzie moaning) That's what
I meant.
Chief (to Meredith and Cristina): I've seen a lot of maturity from you throughout this whole mess. You handled the crisis. And you call for help right away. There was a time not so long ago when you would have come to a different conclusion. You could have stuck to the code and saved your own. Tried to hide the whole mess. You know sometimes, protecting your colleagues is solidarity. And sometimes it's just hubris. I'm glad to see you know the difference.
Alex: Gonna try to get some sleep. I gotta be back to the hospital in
six hours.
Izzie: Alex wait. I'm a mess. I'm a frickin' mess and I know that and,
I ... you deserve better.
Alex: Stop it. If you don't want to be with me, if this is too much for
you right now, it's okay. But you're gonna have to break up with me, because I'm
not going anywhere. I can handle the mess. It's up to you.
Bailey: Why you looking at me?
Cristina: We were just wondering...
Alex: The interns. They...
Meredith: What are you gonna say to them?
Bailey: Uh uh... No. No.
I'm tired and I'm not saying anything to the interns. I raised my babies. You
were my babies. Now you are grown folks and this on you. You raise your own
babies.
George: So we have to talk to them.
Bailey: Your babies.
Meredith: What do we say?
Bailey: Do you really need a speech from me? At this point, after all
this time? Because if you do, you shouldn't even be here. If you do, then I
haven't raised you right. And I know, I raised you right. No! You don't get a
speech from me. It's time you make your own speeches.
Meredith (closing voiceover): Sleep. It's the easiest thing to do. You just... close your eyes. But for so many of us, sleep seems out of our grasp. We want it, but, we don't know how to get it. But once we face our demons, face our fears, and turn to each other for help, night time is not so scary, because we realize, we are not all alone in the dark.
Meredith (opening voiceover): When you're little, night time is scary because there are monsters hiding right under the bed. When you get older, the monsters, are different... self doubt, loneliness, regret... and though you may be older and wiser, you still find yourself scared of the dark.
Meredith: You knew? You knew they were going to cut her open?
Cristina: No.
Meredith: They just said you knew!
Cristina: Sutures! I knew they were doing sutures on themselves. And I
didn't think I needed to say anything because I shut it down. I handled it!
Meredith: Well apparently you didn't, because it almost cost Lexie her
job, not to mention that Sadie almost died in there!
Cristina: Okay, Sadie did that to herself. And let's not pretend that
you have some sort of relationship with Lexie? Let's not pretend that you care
about her.
Meredith: I care about my job! And I care about doing the right thing.
Cristina: Who are you to lecture me about doing the right thing?! Are
you kidding me? You're not an attending, Meredith. You may be sleeping with one,
but you aren't one yet.
Meredith: Is that what this is about? Derek? It's always going to be
about Derek?
Cristina: Okay, fine, it's not about Derek, it's about you and me, and
the fact that you didn't have my back in that room!
Meredith: What would you have wanted me to say...
Cristina: I don't know, anything! You should have said anything! You
have a relationship with the Chief. You have his ear. But you didn't say
anything to defend me! Because this isn't just on me. You just stood there and
you watched him take me out of the running for solo surgery. You let me take all
the blame. But the fact is that we all had interns in that room. We all failed
to supervise them. And if your friend had died in there, that would have been on
all of us too. You should have said that.
Lexie (after
undressing in front of him): Come on, am I really so bad?
Mark: No. I am. (kisses
her)
George: I don't know if I'm more jealous of Alex or worried about Izzie.
I think there's something wrong with her, Mer.
Meredith: There's something wrong with all of us, George.
Dr. Dixon: Dr. Yang. You tortured her today, making her choose among
her peers, some kind of emotional torture. Was that your intention?
Chief: Yes.
Mark (talking to Callie about interns): No. The hot ones are the ones who cause trouble, the ones who distract you from realising your true potential. You need to focus on the medicine. Take all that pent-up sexual energy you waste thinking about hot, young, naked, available interns and put it back into your genius. Your godliness. Build someone an organ; that's hot.
Lexie (to Mark): Hi. I get it. I'm the one who organised a crazy cabal of secret-cutter interns. The thing is, I've been advised to seek out sex as a way out of my sad predicament but I think I would rather just learn today.
Cristina: You won your solo surgery?
Bailey: I was going to pretend you didn't feel the need to ask me that
question. Yang, of course I won, I was good.
Meredith (closing voiceover): We enter the world alone and we leave it alone and everything that happens in between we owe it to ourselves to find a little company. We need help, we need support, othersise we are in it by ourselves. Strangers, cut off from each other, and we forget, just how connected we all are. So instead, we choose love, we choose life, and, for a moment, we feel just a little bit less alone.
Meredith (opening voiceover): Mother called it the greatest and most terrifying moment in her life. Standing at the head of the surgical table, knowing that the patient's life depends on you and you alone. It's what we all dream about. Because the first person that gets to fly solo in the OR ... kind of a bad ass
